SWIMKIDS SETA SWIMMING SKILLS PROGRESSION:
Getting used to the water
This stage involves learning to be comfortable in the water and learning to move in it.
Level 1:
- Assisted kicking
- Submerge face unassisted
- Walk-in chest-high water maintaining balance
- Kick on wall
- Assisted float front/back
Level 2:
- Breath control/bobbing 5 times underwater
- Open eyes underwater
- Freestyle kick unassisted
- Unassisted float front/back
- Transition from vertical / horizontal front/back
- Pick-up underwater object
Level 3:
- Kick 3 meters without a kickboard
- Backstroke kick unassisted
- Level 3 Front glide and recover
- Underwater swim between legs
- Kick 25 meters with board
- Arm movement resembling freestyle
- Swim 5 meters from a wall push-off
Skill development
This stage focuses on the basic movements and orientation ability
needed for swimming strokes.
Level 4:
- Streamline
- Streamline with kick
- Back float
- Back float with kick
- Propel through water with arms out of water and kick
- Roll over from front to back & back to front
Level 5:
- Swim freestyle with side breath for 10 meters
- Swim freestyle 25 meters on front and back
- Swim backstroke 15 meters
- Start swimming underwater
Level 6:
- Swim freestyle with side breathing for 25 meters
- Swim backstroke for 25 meters
- Elementary back 10 meters
- Dolphin kick
- Breaststroke arms
Gettin' Better
This stage improves all four strokes and increases endurance. When
learners have finished this stage, they have learned to swim.
Level 7:
- Dive, swim 50m free
- Swim 50 meters backstroke
- Kick breaststroke 25 meters
- Kick butterfly 10 meters
Level 8:
- Swim freestyle 100 meters
- Swim breaststroke 50 meters
- Kick butterfly 25 meters
Refining Skills
This stage focuses on refining motor co-ordination and introduces the
idea of swimming fast. This is an advanced learning stage.
Level 9:
- Swim freestyle 200 meters
- Swim Individual Medley 100 meters
- Swim butterfly 50 meters
